Hand Drumming Fun with Geoff Johns

Four-week sessions: $60 each session

Geoff Johns
You can learn to play congas, djembes, ashikos and other hand drums in a friendly, supportive setting. You'll also learn hand and stick drumming techniques, coordination, and timekeeping skills. You'll learn to recognize and play a variety of rhythmic patterns and signals, which we will combin.

Our work will be based on a process from Julia Cameron, author of "The Artist's Way." As with sessions based on The Artist's Way, be prepared for some fun and sharing on the road to self-discovery.

Love to sing or play an instrument in an informal setting? No actual singing or playing ability required as our goal is to have fun. If you've got a guitar, mandolin, autoharp, or other instrument you'd like to play, please bring it along as strumming quietly in the back will not only be tolerated but encouraged for those that feel shy about playing in front of others. Bring a Rise-Up-Singing book if you have one (this is a song book with lyrics and chords to 1000+ songs) and we'll also have a few books to share. Finger foods welcome.

Mask-Making Workshop

In this workshop you will be invited to explore your own inner life, with the goal of creating a mask that affirms an important part of yourself that may often remain hidden from view, from yourself and from others. We will use guided imagery, readings, sharing, and arts and crafts materials to facilitate our work together.
You Are What You Eat

Barb Morrow and Mark Swyer are health care professionals who have come to a new understanding of what foods are good for your body and good for the planet. Come to a discussion about whole foods, plant-based diets, and the decision to eat local and not organic, or organic trucked in over several hundred miles. We will all explore the current state of our industrial food system, how it affects our bodies and our planet and some ideas for change.
Positive Discipline – A Parenting Class

Kim Longmore
Kim has a Master's in psychology and has taught kids for 14 years from preschoolers to high schoolers. The class will look at many different parenting philosophies and strategies but will focus mainly on Positive Discipline, a powerful strategy when working with children. The key to positive discipline is not punishment but mutual respect. Topics will include: bridging communication gaps, defusing power struggles, winning cooperation at home and at school, and much more.
Mala Workshop

Make a Mala of wooden beads and learn several meditation practices using the Mala. The Mala is essentially a necklace made like a rosary. It is made by stringing 109 beads together on a string in a particular way. Of course it can be used as adornment, but its real purpose is as a meditation tool. Once we have constructed our Malas, Bruce will instruct the group on several practical yet powerful meditation practices using your beads.
