Evergreen Endorses I-1098

We believe that I-1098 is a religious and social justice issue, and as a congregation we support it fully.

At a recent meeting of the Evergreen Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the congregation voted to endorse I-1098 because it begins to equalize the tax burden and to garner more consistent funding for education and health in our state in the years ahead. There are three key faith principles that support this position—Justice, Equity, and Compassion. These are values that may be found in the great wisdom traditions from all parts of the world.

We call for justice in the reform of our Washington State tax system; the current system is unjust because it burdens those with low or modest incomes through the reliance on sales taxes for state revenue.

We call for equity, whereby each citizen carries his own fair share of the total tax burden.

We call for compassion toward children and those of low income, by more fully funding education and health in our communities.

We hope that others in our state will see this as a issue of religious values and social justice as we do, and join us in support of I-1098.

In faith,

Karen Totten

President, Evergreen UU Fellowship Board of Trustees
